A classic Philip Marlowe novel, longer and more complex than most of them but also more reflective and philosophical. There’s an alcoholic writer in the book who seems a lot like Chandler. The cast of characters is larger than usual but Marlowe is, as always, the focus: he’s getting older, he’s getting frustrated, but he maintains his peculiar code of morality in the face of a corrupt world.
